The EPA czar under President Barack Obama says the Trump administration's rollbacks of key regulations to protect the environment won't stand up to legal challenges, Gina McCarthy told Buzzfeed.

Reversing regulations like the clean water act just to undo a policy of a previous administration won't stand up to legal scrutiny, according to McCarthy, Obama's EPA chief from 2013 to 2017.

"I think the important thing is none of them should be touched unless the administration has a real reason to touch them, other than it was done under the Obama administration, and that is the real problem that we see," McCarthy told Buzzfeed on Tuesday.

EPA administrator Scott Pruitt has been systematically rolling back Obama-era climate policies in President Donald Trump's first year in office, per campaign promises made by Trump, including the clean water rule.

"That is being challenged just because the president told them to do that in an executive order. That's legally not going to hold up," McCarthy told Buzzfeed.
