The president seems like he hopes to be deeply engaged with the lawmakers, one Democratic congressional veteran told reporters as the new Congress began its work Tuesday amid hopes by many for bipartisanship — and action.
"We’re going to meet next week with the president — all of the leadership — and I think he is going to be very involved," Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland told reporters, Politico said.
An administration official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the date and said the meeting would take place at the White House, The Associated Press
The president, along with Vice President Joe Biden, is also meeting with the nine-member executive committee of the National Governors Association
, as they begin new discussions on domestic issues, including homeland security, as well as the federal budget and tax issues, the AP noted.
The president, who must face a new GOP Congress during his last two years in office must go "on offense," MSNBC said
, as he prepares to promote his agenda ahead of his State of the Union address, set for Jan. 20.
He will take a three-day tour to Tennessee, Arizona and Michigan to promote his address, which is expected to focus on economics, The New York Times said.
