Gallup's daily tracking poll declared Obama's approval rating "Steady at 44%" for April, May, and the first week of June. Then his numbers collapsed, dropping from a 1-point approve/disapprove gap seven days ago to a 13-point chasm on Tuesday.
"Obama had been enjoying a sustained recovery from the sharp decline in approval in 2013,"
Gallup wrote in a June 9 blog post. "That recovery may have been aided by the administration's recent reported successes in hitting its healthcare enrollment targets under the Affordable Care Act, although the law itself remains unpopular."
Gallup forecast the plateau could continue through June, having "averaged 44% for the first full week of June."

Beginning June 11, however, the three-day rolling average for those who approved of the president's performance dipped from the preceding two month's average of 44 percent to 41 percent. At the same time, the disapproval rating rose from 51 to 54 percent.
The next day, it took another hit, dipping to 40 percent approval and rising 55 percent disapproval for the June 12-14 period. It was split 41 approve-54 disapprove June 14-17, and the trendline formed the beginnings of what could be a new plateau.
On June 17, an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll corroborated the Gallup poll and made headlines after "a majority of respondents – 54 percent" said they "believe the term-limited president is no longer able to lead the country,"
according to NBC News.
Examining the news cycle over this time period, it appears the accumulation of the VA scandal, the Bergdahl prisoner swap, and the collapse of Iraq at the hands of the ISIS insurgents were likely to blame.
"Just 37 percent approve of [Obama's] handling of foreign policy, which is an all-time low in the survey, while 57 percent disapprove, an all-time high," said NBC.
The day after the poll was released, NBC News White House correspondent Chuck Todd said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that, "This poll is a disaster for the president. You look at the presidency here: lowest job rating, tied for the lowest; lowest on foreign policy. His administration is seen as less competent than the Bush administration, post-Katrina."
Todd said the new numbers were a fatal blow to the White House.
"Essentially the public is saying, 'Your presidency is over' by saying a number like that. 54% saying he no longer has the ability to lead and solve problems."
Congress also reached a new historic low in approval on Thursday, as
Gallup recorded just 7 percent of Americans as saying they have "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in Congress as an American institution. The previous record low was 10 percent.
As far as national institutions go, the military has lead the list in American confidence levels this year with 74 percent approval.
"The military has ranked at the top of the list all but one year since 1989. Prior to that, the church or organized religion, now with 45% confidence, typically finished first," wrote Gallup.
