The Obama campaign is tapping the cast from the HBO series “The Wire” to drum up dollars at a fundraiser in Martha’s Vineyard, the
National Journal reported.
The Sunlight Foundation's Party Time blog published a copy of an invitation to the Aug. 16 event, which read: “Please join the cast of The Wire for a reception in support of the Obama Victory Fund with supporters like you in Martha’s Vineyard.”
The fundraiser costs $250 to attend and $2,500 to be on the host committee.
President Barack Obama has said he is a fan of the show, which is praised by critics as the greatest television series ever made and is recognized for its realistic portrayal of urban life.
The creator of the series, David Simon, an author and former police reporter, described the second season of the series as “a meditation on the death of work and the betrayal of the American working class . . . it is a deliberate argument that unencumbered capitalism is not a substitute for social policy; that on its own, without a social compact, raw capitalism is destined to serve the few at the expense of the many.”
