NYC Lays Out Red Carpet for Democratic Officials

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio will try to sell Democratic National Committee officials arriving Monday on why they should select Brooklyn for the party's 2016 national convention.

Members of the Democratic National Committee Technical Advisory Group will be welcomed with a lunch catered by world-class chefs, guided tours of the borough, a gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s rooftop garden on Monday night, a dinner at the mayoral mansion on Tuesday, and other events, according to the New York Daily News.

Brooklyn, which is considered to be among the top three candidates, is receiving some high-profile support for its pitch, including from Bill and Hillary Clinton and their allies, The New York Times reported.

According to the paper, the city has brought in several Clinton allies to assist in the courting process, including Gabrielle Fialkoff, who was the finance director for Hillary Clinton's successful 2000 Senate campaign, and financier Alan Patricof, a major donor to both Clintons.

Other major figures, from Napster founder Sean Parker and designer Diane von Furstenberg to union leaders like Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union President Stuart Appelbaum and 32BJ SEIU President Hector Figueroa have expressed willingness to raise the funds needed for the city to host the convention, according to a list of 30 donors obtained by Politico.

According to the Times, taxpayers would pick up $8.1 million of the tab to host the convention, and the city wants to collect another $132 million in private donations.

Among the other cities in contention are: Philadelphia; Columbus, Ohio; Birmingham, Alabama; and Phoenix, according to the Daily News.

The Republican National Committee has announced that Cleveland will be the site for its nominating convention.
