NY Times in Hot Seat for Killing Audio Interview With Stephen Miller

The New York Times is being criticized for its decision not to release audio from an interview with President Donald Trump's senior policy adviser Stephen Miller after an objection from the White House.

The Times, which spoke to Miller on the record, said it conducted an "extended interview" with Miller over the weekend for an article about the Trump administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy, which includes taking kids away from their parents as they cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

Miller was quoted in the story, but when The Times prepared to release an audio of the Miller interview, the White House balked, saying it had not agreed to it being aired on a podcast.

"While Miller's comments were on the record, we realized that the ground rules for the original interview were not clear, and so we made a decision not to run the audio," The Times said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Media observers had decidedly mixed reactions.

"This is rather explicit acknowledgement by the NYT that it's willing to make sacrifices to preserve its access to senior people within the White House. Is that access worth it? Maybe — they get a lot of scoops! But let's not pretend there aren't trade-offs," tweeted Nate Silver, editor-in-chief of FiveThirtyEight.
