The latest potentially illegal leak from special counsel Robert Mueller's grand jury probing Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election raises serious questions about the integrity and impartiality of the whole investigation, according to the New York Post editorial board.

The editorial board said the leaks raise suspicion that the special counsel may be playing politics with his prosecutions, especially since Mueller has been criticized for overwhelmingly hiring prosecutors who are Democratic contributors.

The latest leak was the NBC News report earlier this week that Mueller has gathered enough evidence to bring charges against former national security adviser Michael Flynn and his son.

This comes on the heels of last month's leak to CNN that the grand jury had approved the first charges in the probe, which turned out to be President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates.

What makes this so important, the Post editorial pointed out, is that with the stakes so high, the public needs to have, as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie noted, "confidence in the fact that the grand-jury process is secret and, as a result, fair."

Although the editorial admitted that "the leaks may not necessarily have come from Mueller's office, the incentive for anyone else is pretty limited."

If the leaks are coming from the special counsel's office or the grand jury itself, it would be a criminal violation, but Mueller has not come out publicly about these illegal actions.

What makes this even more worrisome, the editorial says, is that House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy says he specifically warned Mueller about making sure there were no leaks on the investigation.
