House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes on Saturday ripped Stephen Colbert's spoof on his late-night talk show Friday, saying the segment proved that "conservatives in this country are under attack."
"The Left controls not only all the universities in the country, but they also control Hollywood in this country and the mainstream media," the California Republican told Neil Cavuto on Fox News.
"So, it is conservatives in this country that are under attack."
In the segment, Colbert traveled to Washington to release a "memo" to legislators, including top Intel panel Democrat Adam Schiff, also of California, and Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake.
Colbert spoofed the two memos released last month by committee Republicans and Democrats regarding surveillance abuses by the FBI and Justice Department in the panel's Russian meddling investigation.
In Schiff's office, Colbert asked him to read his memo out loud.
"It says, 'Devin Nunes is a …,' and then it’s redacted," Schiff said.
"We’re not allowed to release that information," Colbert said. "CBS won’t let me say it on air either."
Colbert then visited Flake's office, calling him the "only Republican" who would read his memo on national television.
"Do you have any guesses as to what it might say underneath?" Colbert asked, referring to the Nunes redaction.
Flake, who is retiring after his term ends later this year, held the memo up against the light while taking guesses.
"Californian? Public servant?" Flake said. "Former dairy farmer?"
"Former dairy farmer?" Colbert exclaimed. "Really?
"Because he seems to be milking it right now."
In response, Nunes told Cavuto on Saturday: "I enjoy the attacks.
"If they want to continue to attack me, that's fine."
