A policy expert at a briefing for Capitol Hill staff members Monday blasted President Donald Trump's administration for its efforts to take on Iran, sources with knowledge of the briefing told The Washington Free Beacon.

The American Israel Public Affairs Conference (AIPAC) sponsored the briefing at its Washington, D.C., headquarters with policy experts Ilan Goldenberg and Michael Singh, those familiar with the event said in the Free Beacon.

"As with all our outside speakers, the views expressed are their own," an AIPAC official said in the Free Beacon.

Goldenberg, the Middle East security director for Center for a New American Security (CNAS), called for closer ties with the Islamic Republic and was said to argue in favor of the Iran nuclear deal. One senior congressional adviser said AIPAC hosting Goldenberg shows some parts of AIPAC do not support the tougher Iran policies of the Trump administration.

"Goldenberg built his profile during the Obama administration by attacking Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu," the adviser said in the Free Beacon. "He's one of the loudest critics of President Trump's Israel and Iran policies."

The pro-Israel group is losing its credibility, a second source, a former U.S. official, said in the Free Beacon.

"Rather than push for something real, AIPAC is once again selling American and Israeli national security interests down the river in the name of preserving 'bipartisanship,'" the former official said in The Free Beacon.

Goldenberg has also criticized Trump on Twitter. He responded Sunday to Trump's critique of LaVar Ball, father of one of the UCLA players that had been imprisoned in China.
