See President Trump's rally speech again Saturday, June 30, at 3 p.m./ET only on Newsmax TV - DirecTV Ch. 349, U-Verse 1220, DISH 216, and FiOS 615.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he was honored Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy was retiring now "because he felt confident in me to make the right choice and carry on his great legacy."

"We really have to take our hats off to Justice Kennedy," Trump told about 6,000 supporters at the Scheels Arena in Fargo, North Dakota, at a rally to support Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer, who is challenging Democratic incumbent Sen. Heidi Heitkamp in November.

"Justice Kennedy's retirement makes the issue of Senate control one of the vital issues of our time.

"Democrats want judges who will rewrite the Constitution, anyway they want to do it, and take away your Second Amendment," Trump said. "Erase your borders and throw open the jailhouse doors, and destroy your freedoms.

"We must elect more Republicans," the president said. "We have to do that."

President Trump's rally came hours after Kennedy, 81, said he would retire at the end of July.

Kennedy joined the bench in 1987 after he was nominated by President Ronald Reagan — and his retirement as senior associate justice gives Trump a second high court pick and a chance to further solidify its conservative majority.

Neil Gorsuch, a former clerk for Kennedy whom Trump nominated last year, joined the court in April.

"He's doing great," Trump said of Gorsuch. "He is a star.

"Justice Kennedy is a star, and we appreciate it."

President Trump lauded Cramer as "a senator who doesn't just talk like they are from North Dakota, but votes like they are from North Dakota" — and he repeatedly bashed Heitkamp for backing the Democratic agenda in Congress.

"Heidi will vote 'no' to any pick we make for the Supreme Court," Trump told the crowd, and referenced her objection to this travel ban that was upheld Tuesday by in a 5-4 decision by the justices.

"Heidi was also against us from the very beginning of the travel ban, a common-sense policy to improve our vetting and our national security.

"I'm proud to report that just [Tuesday], the Supreme Court upheld the travel ban on our authority to keep America safe," he said.

"The travel-ban ruling underscores just how critical it is to confirm judges who will support our Constitution."

Heitkamp, who is seeking her second term, is among 10 Democratic senators on the ballot in in states Trump carried in 2016.

Their fate will help decide whether Democrats stand a chance at capturing the Senate, where Republicans now hold a 51-49 edge.

President Trump has been tweeting and appearing at rallies to show his support for various Republican candidates on the ballot this fall.

His tweet earlier this month encouraging South Carolina voters to back state Rep. Katie Arrington over incumbent Rep. Mark Sanford led to her primary victory.

In the last week, Trump has also backed Republican candidates for Congress at rallies in Minnesota and South Carolina.

"He loves you, I will tell you that," Trump said of Cramer. "He loves the state — and he loves the people."
