Norquist to Remind House GOPers They Signed Anti-Tax Pledge

By    |   Saturday, 16 June 2012 09:49 PM EDT

Grover Norquist, president of the taxpayer advocacy group American’s for Tax Reform, will meet with House Republicans in a bid to rekindle support for his anti-tax pledge that all but six of them have signed.

Co-hosted by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp of Michigan, the meeting comes at a time when Republicans have been backing down from their commitment, reports The Hill.

Just this past week, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina openly disputed the pledge, suggesting new revenue as an effective means for reducing the deficit. A total of 16 Republicans also voted for the Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction plan, which also proposes new revenues.

Billed as a purely ‘educational’ event, the Norquist meeting precedes Congress’s upcoming negotiations concerning extension of the Bush-era tax cuts and a renovation of both the individual and corporate tax codes.

Endorsed by Ronald Reagan upon its inception in 1986, the Taxpayer Protection Pledge — which Norquist says he dreamed up when he was 12-years-old — has been signed by over 1,100 state office holders as well as 238 current House members and 41 current Senators.
