The FAA has banned all planes from flying near President-elect Donald Trump's primary residence in New York City, New York magazine reports.

The government-imposed flight restriction effectively makes Trump Tower in midtown a national security site, the magazine says. The flight ban, which keeps all planes at least 2-nautical miles away, is in effect until Inauguration Day on Jan. 20 when Trump officially moves into the White House.

According to the magazine, flight restrictions came into widespread use after 9/11 and are used to protect "nuclear power stations, big sporting events and other things that terrorists might want to fly into."

TMZ calls it a "massive security blanket" around the 68-story building on 5th Avenue and says the restrictions were put in place almost immediately after Trump was declared the winner in the presidential race.

The website reports a 1-nautical mile airspace restriction is also in place for Vice President-elect Mike Pence's home in Indiana.
