The United States' Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley cited human rights groups in the Trump administration's decision to pull the U.S. out of the U.N. Human Rights Council.

One day after Haley announced the U.S. pullout from the council, Politico reported that she sent a letter to the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and placed the blame on them.

"You should know that your efforts to block negotiations and thwart reform were a contributing factor in the U.S. decision to withdraw from the council," Haley wrote, according to Politico. "Going forward, we encourage you to play a constructive role on behalf of human rights, rather than the deconstructive one you played in this instance."

Haley furthered her argument by accusing the NGOs of siding more with Russia and China rather than the U.S.

"It is unfortunate that your letter sought to undermine our attempts to improve the Human Rights Council. You put yourself on the side of Russia and China, and opposite the United States, on a key human rights issue," she wrote.

Haley added, however, that the administration's withdrawal from the council does not mean it is softening on the battle against human rights abuses.

The U.S. withdrawal from the 47-member council had been in the works for some time. White House national security adviser John Bolton opposed the body's creation when he was U.S. ambassador to the UN in 2006. Haley warned a year ago that the U.S. would pull out if the council didn't address what she saw as its bias against Israel and the fact that many of its current members — that list includes China, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt — have poor human rights records themselves.
