Nikki Haley: Kelly, Tillerson Not 'Dangerous' but Their Attempts Were

Former White House chief of staff John Kelly and ex-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson were not "dangerous people," but their attempts to undermine President Donald Trump were dangerous in themselves, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley said Tuesday.

"I didn't call them dangerous people," Haley said on NBC's "Today" while talking about what she'd written in her new book, "With All Due Respect: Defending America with Grit and Grace."

"What I said is what they were trying to do is dangerous. I have always referred to John Kelly as a patriot. I am a military wife. I respect him and his family for what they went through, but to undermine a president because you think you know better than him is wrong."

Haley's comments came after news reports concerning claims she made in her book that Kelly and Tillerson pulled her aside and said they were trying to save the country by resisting Trump.

"We were having a meeting within the Oval Office," Haley said. "Rex and I disagreed on an issue. I play it all out in the book, but basically, we went to John Kelly's office, and it was a long two-hour meeting where they basically said that they were not trying to undermine the president. They were trying to save the country."

The issue, though, was not that they thought Trump was a "rogue president," said Haley, but that they disagreed on moving the Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

"I was a governor," said Haley, the first female governor of South Carolina. "If people in my cabinet tried to undermine me, it's very dangerous."

She confirmed that she told Trump about the conversation and that she had, while in office, also confronted Trump on a few matters. She noted, in particular, his news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, during which he had seemed to side with Russia over U.S. intelligence agencies.

"I said, look, this sounded soft, and he said, really, John Kelly was in the room with me when I had this meeting, and he looked at John, and he said all of you guys said I did great," recalled Haley.
