President Donald Trump used part of his speech Monday night to clarify the importance of unity in the United States, and to stress there is "no room for bigotry in our country," U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Tuesday.

"He brought it home to the fact that if our troops are fighting overseas, and they're fighting for our freedoms and our rights, let's not abuse it, because at the end of the day, we are one country, and we have to stand united," Haley told CNN "New Day" anchor Chris Cuomo.

Haley rose to national prominence following the moral leadership she showed in her home state of South Carolina, where she was governor at the time, after Dylann Roof shot and killed nine black churchgoers at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston in June 2015.

She told Cuomo Tuesday that she had a personal conversation with Trump over the violent protests that shook Charlottesville, Virginia earlier this month, leaving one woman dead.

"I had a personal conversation with the president about Charlottesville, and I will leave it at that, but I will tell you that there is no room for hate in this country," said Haley. "I know the pain that hate can cause, and we need to isolate haters and we need to make sure that they know there is no place for them, because our country is founded on so much more than that. I think that they're a minority that's very loud that we have to stomp out every chance we get."

Members of the KKK, neo-Nazis, and white supremacists are "terrible people," she continued.

"Anyone that goes and tries to spew hate on someone because of their color or their religion, or their place in life, that's terribly wrong, and it's something that we don't stand for in America," said Haley. "I think the president clarified that last night."

What Americans should do, she continued, is to"always honor" free speech, but call out hate speech and isolate racists.

"We need to make sure that they know that they are in the minority and there are a lot more of us that love our brothers and sisters, regardless of where they're from, what they've preached and who they are," said Haley.
