A governmental ethics watchdog group has called on the Office of Special Counsel to look into a Republican endorsement by Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to HuffPost.

Haley retweeted an endorsement from President Donald Trump for Republican candidate Ralph Norman.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) sent a letter to the Office of Special Counsel Tuesday, saying Haley's tweet violates the Hatch Act, which forbids members of the executive branch (except the president and vice-president) from "interfering with or affecting the result of an election."

"By posting this tweet on an account that referred to her official position, Ambassador Haley likely engaged in political activity prohibited by law," the letter from CREW said.

"Ambassador Haley appears to have removed her retweet after two journalists pointed out that it might constitute a violation of the Hatch Act," the letter read.

In her retweet, Haley used what is apparently her only Twitter account, which refers to her as "United States Ambassador to the United Nations."

"While it is not fully clear if Ambassador Haley's @nikkihaley Twitter account is an official or personal account, she appears to be using it in an official capacity," the CREW letter said.

CREW also called for Haley to be disciplined for the retweet, saying the "OSC should therefore commence an immediate investigation and take or recommend appropriate disciplinary action against Ambassador Haley."

The Office of Special Counsel has weighed in before on apparent Hatch Act violations. Earlier in June, White House social media director Dan Scavino was warned over a tweet in which he called for the defeat of a Michigan congressman, according to CNN.
