Newt Gingrich: US Government Corrupt; Mueller Must 'Show Me the Money'

Newt Gingrich delivered a direct, one-word answer when asked on Tuesday whether he believed the government is corrupt.

"Yes," the former Republican House speaker said to Whoopi Goldberg during an interview on ABC’s "The View."

Asked how long a period of time he believes the government has been crooked, Gingrich replied:

"I think you can go back to a number of cases. I think the special counsel in the Bush years that set up [former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney] Scooter Libby was totally corrupt, totally dishonest.

"I think that the U.S. Attorney who convicted a senator [Ted Stevens] from Alaska and then later turned out that, in fact, he had hidden the evidence that proved the senator was innocent – you know there’s an entire book ["Licensed to Lie"] on it by Sydney Powell."

And how does Gingrich feel about the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russia’s interference with the 2016 presidential race and whether the Trump campaign was involved?

I’m saddened by how Mueller’s handled this. "I have a very simple 'Jerry Maguire' comment. Remember ‘Jerry Maguire?’ Show me the money?” Gingrich said, referring to the Oscar-winning 1996 Tom Cruise flick about a slick-talking sports agent."'Show me the money.' This guy [Mueller] has had $17 million, a year and a half. It’s supposed to be on Russia. Show me something that relates Trump…"

When Goldberg’s co-host Sonny Hostin noted that there have been “17 indictments and 5 guilty pleas” out of  "Mueller’s probe so far, spurring applause from the studio audience, Gingrich fired back: “There’s nothing that ties Donald J. Trump to anything involving Russia."

"Show me the evidence. [Mueller has] had a year and a half and $17 million, he ought to have something by now," he said.

Gingrich also commented on the president’s sometimes incendiary comments, saying he believes that as commander in chief, Trump needs to set a higher standard for himself.

"He has joined in the general reduction of the quality of language in America … There are times frankly I would not particularly want my grandchildren to talk like Donald Trump," Gingrich said.
