Newt Gingrich compared himself and Donald Trump to pirates Wednesday night, saying they both take on the establishment, during an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News
"In many ways, Donald Trump is like a pirate. He's outside the normal system, he gets things done, he's bold, he's actually like a figure out of a movie," the former House speaker said. "In a lot of ways, my entire career has been a little bit like a pirate. I've taken on the establishment in both parties."
"Do you really want a two-pirate ticket?" Gingrich asked.
Gingrich told Hannity Trump had not yet made up his mind about his running mate choice.
"A point he made at the end of our meeting to all of us: Only one person knows who is going to be the vice president, and that person doesn't know yet. I thought that was a good way to put it," Gingrich said.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence
would be a good choice for vice president, Gingrich said. "A lot of people who are a little jittery about Donald Trump would feel reassured talking with Pence" and "I think Trump has a tough call," choosing between myself and Pence.
Gingrich said his capabilities are different from Pence's. "I'm oriented toward the great base of the party, communicating big ideas, being on television."
Pence would be a good choice, because he's "really good at reaching out on a personal basis to a lot of people, who, frankly, Trump may not be able to reach on his own," he added.
Trump is to announce his running mate
choice on July 15.
Gingrich could bring the Republican Party together, according to a Republican operative in a profile of Gingrich's career by Politico
."When the debacle of the Trump election is over, how do you pick up the pieces of the party and rebuild it? Newt could do that," the operative told Politico.
