Democrats want "ruin or rule" and are engaged in a plan of character assassination with their continued push against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
"The real question in the 2018 election will be what kind of America do we want to become?" Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "If the FBI comes out and says there is zero evidence that Judge Kavanaugh did anything wrong, the Democrats will promptly [be] shifting to 'what about drinking? What about this? What about that?'" he added.
Democrats are engaged in a deliberate mission of "vicious, willful character assassination," said Gingrich, and "Republicans have to get awake and understand this is not some game."
"If they have to ruin the entire system, they're prepared to ruin it," he also said.
The former speaker also accused the Democrats of weaponizing the #metoo movement with their actions against Kavanaugh, said Gingrich, even while it's important to stop the "sort of behavior we've seen, like Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby."
Gingrich also noted that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, whose testimony last week was widely found credible, leaves some questions, including why she had been "hiding" at her parents' home in Delaware, "which Democratic staffers knew."
He also questioned flatly believing Ford's claims.
"You aren't supposed to take on the person in a direct way because it doesn't fit the current appropriate behavior, but at what point do you allow this guy, this father, this husband, this son to be destroyed on the unsupported allegation of a single person about a high school incident 36 years ago for which she has been able to deliver zero corroboration?" he said.
