Gingrich: Trump, Congress Learning They Need Each Other

There are still some "never Trumpers" in Congress, but for the most part, lawmakers and President Donald Trump are starting to realize they need each other, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday, refuting claims made by talk show host Rush Limbaugh that the "establishment" won't let Trump succeed.

"As much as I admire Rush, and we have known each other many years, I think he is a half step behind what's happening," Gingrich said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" show. "Are there some never Trumpers? There are some people who cause trouble, sure."

But Trump and members of Congress are working closely together on tax reform, and launched their plans as a team this week, Gingrich said.

"This is the postcard tax form that 85 percent of Americans will be able to file under the new Republican tax plan," Gingrich said. "They launched it this week as a team. I think that they have learned a lot of painful lessons over the last nine months. I think they recognize that all three are relying on each other. Trump is not going to get his big changes without the Congress. Congress isn't going to be successful without Trump."

To think otherwise misses the complexity of the constitutional system, Gingrich said, and then assume other people don't want to help Trump.

"Our constitution was designed to be really hard to get things done, in order to avoid dictatorship," Gingrich said. "[Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell got 49 out of 52 Republicans to vote to repeal Obamacare. That's three who voted no. There were 48 Democrats who voted no. That's 16 Democrats for every Republican. So if you want to blame, quote, the establishment, you ought to start with the Democrats because they are the ones loss and are constantly on every single issue blocking and slowing things down."

It would be easy to say that if Republicans could pick up six or eight seats next year, he conceded, but pointed out late President Ronald Reagan would have worked to go after the 48 Democrats who voted against healthcare reform.

"I understand there is a certain desire on the right to always be mad at ourselves," Gingrich said. "There are certain people who make money sending out appeals to attack ourselves. As somebody who has worked with Ronald Reagan, I don't think that's the right way to do it. We focused on the country, not on inside the party fighting."
