The criticism President Donald Trump is getting for singing along with the national anthem at Monday night's College Football Playoff National Championship game are further proof that liberals have nothing but "junk" to complain about, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.

"This is why the left is going to be very disappointed with the elections this fall," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"The new tax cuts are working. Over a million Americans have already gotten bonuses and more are coming down the road. Companies are announcing new investments and creating new jobs. The deregulation is working, and that's accelerating the economy.

"The president is standing strong for the national defense and for funding the Pentagon. All these are real serious things. The left has nothing but junk."

The most Democrats can claim, he said, is "that they are so committed to DACA reform, to the dreamers, that they are willing to close down the American government over it. That's their battle cry . . . that's all the left has got left now is finding new examples of junk."

With Trump, if he "came out on the field, sang the national anthem solo, and did so perfectly, people on the left would claim this was a sign he is not really doing his job because he is studying music, and how can he be spending all this time studying music when he ought to be president?" said Gingrich.

The former speaker also discussed the latest news about FBI agent Peter Strzok and lawyer Lisa Page may have been leaking items to the press.

According to a report in The Hill, House and Senate panels are looking into anti-Trump texts between the two FBI professionals, including one exchange that suggested they knew of Wall Street Journal article in advance.

"The tragedy of all of this is that 98 percent of the FBI people join for the right reasons and are proud of the history of of the FBI," Gingrich said.

"You have at the very top one percent or two percent who really have gone sour and clearly engaged in things totally unacceptable and goes to the very top . . . this zone of corruption is very dangerous and very real."

Congress, he continued, "as an obligation to investigate and find out what happened and candidly, so does the attorney general. He is not recused in this zone of FBI corruption. And he ought to be more aggressive in finding out what happened inside his agency."

Meanwhile, there has been a great deal of talk about Trump sitting down for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, but Gingrich said he'd rather Trump be given a list of written questions to answer, and the president's legal team should insist that that would be the only way he'd allow an interview.

"I would not get involved in a free for all," he said. "I think the idea of putting Trump in a room with five or six hardened, very, very clever lawyers, all of whom are trying to trap him would be a very, very bad idea."
