Newt Gingrich agrees with Donald Trump that the judge in a lawsuit against him is biased, but says bringing ethnicity into the mix is a practice that could eventually "destroy America."
"There are a lot of reasons for Trump to say, for Trump's lawyers to say, they want a new judge. That's perfectly legitimate," Gingrich said during an appearance Monday on The John Gibson Show. "I just don't think we want to get into a game where we describe people based on ethnicity."
Gingrich said judging people in terms of their ethnicity "goes against our whole model of being an American."
The former House Speaker, who is reportedly on Trump's
vice presidential shortlist, then gave examples of whites only having white judges, blacks having black judges, and Asians having Asian judges.
"Once you go down that road, you destroy America. You can't take a group definition and apply it.
"If there are things this judge has done that are wrong, and I think there are, you can pound him into the ground as a judge who did the following things. But that's taking on an individual. It's not taking on an entire ethnic group."
During a television appearance earlier Monday, Gingrich said he and Trump had a
"disagreement" over how the real estate mogul is criticizing U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel.
