
When the recession swept the country, Michigan — particularly Detroit — already was reeling. The city was bleeding jobs and found itself billions in debt. Recovery looked bleak.
Enter Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who was challenged with leading Detroit and the state out of its financial crisis, is now is drawing criticism on the campaign trail from challenger Mark Schauer. The Democrat has criticized the governor for handing the city over to an emergency manager and opening it up to cuts to pension plans for city workers.
