New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie said he was surprised President Donald Trump hasn't "gotten out of campaign mode" since becoming president, Politico reported Saturday.

"You know, I thought that he'd be a little less in campaign mode than he's been. I think he's never really kind of gotten out of campaign mode, and I thought he might," said Christie, who chairs Trump's commission on opioid abuse.

"I guess it's his judgment that that's what he has to do, but that's surprised me a little bit," he continued.

Perhaps Trump stays in "campaign mode" because he consistently keeps track of polling data, the article suggested. A Rasmussen poll on Friday showed his approval rating had dropped to 42 percent.

However, a new Harvard CAPS-Harris poll showed his base has remained loyal with 79 percent of Republicans and 86 percent of Trump's voters saying they approve of his job as president, The Hill reported Saturday.

"The polls are about the base," one unnamed Trump adviser said. "He cares about the base."

Neil Newhouse, who worked as the leading pollster on Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign, said Trump was smart in his use of data to sway lawmakers on his agenda priorities.

"I would call this strategic polling where — this is going to sound maybe a little crass — they don't really care where all Americans stand on the issue of tax reform, because 35 to 40 percent of Americans are never going to support anything he does," said Newhouse. "Why should I spend my money trying to find out what they think?"

Two Trump advisers said the president follows the Gallup poll daily, though there are reports his staff tends to show him more favorable polls.
