N.H. Registered Republicans Vote Trump; Undeclared for Haley

By    |   Tuesday, 23 January 2024 10:21 PM EST

Three in 4 Republican registered voters said they voted for front-runner Donald Trump while roughly two-thirds of undeclared voters — independents — broke for runner-up Nikki Haley in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary on Tuesday night, according to CNN's exit poll analysis.

The race was called for Trump shortly after 8 p.m. ET.

Further, nearly two-thirds said they were conservative, including a third that described themselves as "very conservative," according to CNN's polling. About 30% said they were moderates.

Most did not describe themselves as part of the Make America Great Again movement, according to CNN, compared to the Iowa caucuses, where nearly 50% identified as MAGA.

Roughly two-thirds of voters without college degrees said they voted for Trump while about 60% with college degrees voted for Haley, according to CNN.

CNN also found that about 8 in 10 who voted for Trump said they "strongly favored" him. Conversely, roughly 40% of those who voted for Haley said they did so out of distaste for Trump. Only a third said they "strongly favored" her.

New Hampshire primary voters, matching Iowa caucusgoers, identified immigration and the economy as the top two issues. In stark contrast to Iowa, however, a majority of New Hampshire voters said they would oppose a federal ban on abortions, according to CNN. In Iowa, 59% of caucusgoers favored banning abortion nationwide.

Edison Research interviewed 2,029 New Hampshire primary voters across 40 different polling sites for CNN. It has a margin of error of +/- 4 points.
