If Democrats are to regain control of the House, keeping the 1st Congressional District seat of retiring Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-NH, will be of paramount importance – but it is proving difficult against surging Republican candidate Eddie Edwards.

Bidding to become the Granite State's first black congressman, Edwards has pulled into a statistical tie with 38-year-old Democratic candidate Chris Pappas in the latest Emerson College poll.

Pappas had a sizable cushion, according to RealClear Politics analysis, but it is now gone. Edwards is within the margin of error at 46 percent of the vote – with 5 percent still undecided. Pappas had 48 percent in a poll with 4.3 percentage point margin of error.

Edwards is overcoming President Donald Trump's negative 9-point favorability ratio in New Hampshire. President Trump is viewed favorably by 42 percent and unfavorably by 51 percent.

Emerson College polled 570 potential voters between Oct. 27-29 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percent.
