More than 50 Democrats in New Hampshire have announced that they are supporting the incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, according to the Washington Examiner.

Ayotte's campaign released a statement from Democrat Lou Prince, the oldest World War II veteran in New Hampshire, in which he cited Ayotte's efforts to improve veterans' access to medical care. "Some things have to transcend politics, and this year especially, I think all voters have to look beyond party labels at a person's real record and beliefs," Prince said.

Democratic House of Representatives candidate Tom Thibeault credited Ayotte's willingness to work with both parties. "We are in the midst of one of the most partisan election cycles of my lifetime, which is why I am casting my vote for candidates who I believe will cut through the politics and work with anyone to achieve results," Thibeault said.

GOP critics have called her insufficiently conservative. The free market group Club for Growth rated her at 98 percent in 2011 when she entered office, but rated her at 54 percent in 2015.

"I'm humbled by the support I've received from people all across the political spectrum, and I look forward to continuing to work with anyone — regardless of political party — to get things done for our state," Ayotte said.

Her opponent, former Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, trails Ayotte by less than two points, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average.

New Hampshire TV station NH1 reported that Ayotte slammed Hassan for not calling out Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential candidate, over recently discovered emails that could be relevant to national security.

"She called it a mistake, but it's more than a mistake. It's about our national security," Ayotte said.

Columnist George Will discussed the Hassan/Ayotte race, calling it an "American rarity, a choice between two grown-ups."
