Never Trumper David Marcus said in a column at The Federalist on Monday he does plan to vote for the GOP nominee after all — but not because he wants him to be president.
Marcus argues that Democrat Hillary Clinton will win the White House on Nov. 8. But since her presidency will be almost as bad as what he believes Donald Trump's would be, he urged conservatives to cast a "protest vote" for Trump instead of a third-party candidate to avoid giving Clinton an electoral landslide.
"It is very possible that voting for Trump as a protest against Clinton is the best chance I have to stave off a Clinton administration that runs roughshod over the American people and points to us saying, 'This is what you asked for,'" Marcus writes.
While a landslide Trump loss might fulfill a sense of schadenfreude for Never Trump Republicans and possibly push Trump's base to a more reasonable candidate in 2020, "a message needs to be sent to Hillary Clinton, Democrats, and the media," Marcus says.
"For her to enter the White House with a huge mandate is unacceptable," he writes. "Her flouting of the law, her disregard for the Constitution, the government and media's unwillingness to hold her accountable for anything, all compel me to send a message with my vote that I do not consent."
