President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Adam Laxalt for Nevada governor in Tuesday's primary and backed U.S. House candidate Katie Arrington in her South Carolina primary race by slamming incumbent Rep. Mark Sanford.

"Adam is smart, works hard, and knows how to win," Trump said on Twitter. "He will be a great governor."

Laxalt is among three candidates vying for the seat vacated by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval.

He later thanked Trump for his support:

In the South Carolina primary, Sanford, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus that has frequently criticized Trump, is facing a strong challenge from Arrington, a state House member, and third-time candidate Dimitri Cherny.

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA," Trump said in his Twitter post. "He is MIA and nothing but trouble."

He said Arrington was "tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes."
