Sen. Nelson: Time to Let Humanity Come Before Politics

By    |   Tuesday, 03 October 2017 03:05 PM

Americans must approach shooting incidents, such as what happened in Las Vegas over the weekend, with common sense, and they must let their humanity overrule their political views, Sen. Bill Nelson said Tuesday.

"Whether the shooter be a terrorist, or a mentally deranged person, or in the case of (Rep. Steve) Scalise, a person who was motivated by politics, we've got to approach it with common sense," the Florida Democrat told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program.

"How do we start treating each other more like we would like to be treated? If we do that, we would get a lot more done."

Florida, meanwhile, is working to help bring people from Puerto Rico in to escape the continuing emergency situation going on in the island territory after Hurricane Maria.

"We do expect quite a few," said Nelson. "It could be 100,000 or more than that, that because of the deplorable conditions, the depreciated conditions on the island, they will be coming to Florida, New York."

Many Puerto Ricans have family in Florida, and recovery centers are being set up to make it easier for the family members to connect.

"We will have our caseworkers from the Nelson office in there to help them streamline the process of dealing with any federal agencies, including FEMA, including some of their Social Security benefits that they would be available for, including any of their medical needs that they could get through medicaid that they might not already have back in Puerto Rico," the senator said. "So it's going to be a welcoming for our fellow American citizens from Puerto Rico to help them out in this transition."
