Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said Saturday that he likes Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders for "his straight-talking populism" and his dedication to Americans' welfare, but he is endorsing Hillary Clinton because she "can both envision a better world and take the necessary steps to make that vision a reality."

"This election truly is a choice between hell and reason, and I want the best, most-qualified candidate to ensure that the United States lands on the right side of that battle," Abdul-Jabbar writes in an op-ed piece for The Washington Post.

"In Clinton we have a proven warrior who has both the commitment and record of accomplishment to lead the fight."

And Sanders, said Abdul-Jabbar, is "a decent man with the courage of his convictions" who "will make a strong ally for Clinton."

The 2016 election, Abdul-Jabbar said, is important to American history,  not only because Clinton is a woman, but because of the importance of the nation's policies and her stance on them.

Quoting Albert Camus,  who wrote on Aug. 8, 1945, two days after the bombing of Hiroshima that "This is no longer a prayer but a demand to be made by all peoples to their governments — a demand to choose definitively between hell and reason," the basketball great said this year's election is also a choice between hell and reason.

And with GOP candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, Abdul-Jabbar writes, "we are witnessing a rejection of these foundational ideals in favor of a hellish chaos of lies, misdirection, attacks on the Constitution and, most harmful to the country, a rejection of reason."

Abdul-Jabbar also said he is "frustrated and angry" hearing about voters' frustration and anger toward Washington as the excuse to add candidates who will only make that worse.

"These voters share a distrust of experts, preferring 'the wisdom of ordinary people.' Really? I prefer the wisdom of a trained physician when I have pain in my chest," Abdul Jabbar writes.

Electing Clinton will also prevent a trend to unleash hatred and fear over reason, said
Abdul-Jabbar, as he is concerned that the nation is in a battle between the irrational and with reason.

Abdul also praised Clinton's fight for national health care since 1993, giving her credit for the Affordable Care Act which has brought insurance coverage to millions.

Further, he said he appreciates Clinton's support of President Barack Obama's policies, and believes that continuing the reforms need to be a priority.
