No matter what President Donald Trump decides about the future of his beleaguered National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, "he loses either way," Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer said Monday.
In an interview on Fox News' "Special Report with Bret Baier," Krauthammer called Flynn's talks with a Russian diplomat were the "right thing, but lying about it became a "cover-up without a crime."
"The president is faced with a very difficult problem," he said. "If he fires him, then it puts into question the president's own judgment, choosing him in the first place, having to fire him within three weeks."
On the other hand, Krauthammer said, "this is a guy who has been advising" the president, "stuck with him, has appeared to have done the right thing in talking with the Russian ambassador, and done a crazy thing and lying about it" to Vice President Mike Pence.
"Either way, he's going to be hurt," Krauthammer said. "But if he's going to get rid of him, he better have somebody of stature waiting in the wings."
The White House said the president is still evaluating the situation, but Krauthammer thinks that is because Trump still has not made up his mind on what to do.
"The silence over the weekend was a result of the fact that I don't think it was a great strategic decision, keep people hanging in all this," he said. "I think he simply didn't know which way to go. He loses either way."
"I think the reason we are waiting for a decision is that it's entirely up to the president, and I'm not sure the president himself has decided," Krauthammer added.
