All of the four men President Donald Trump interviewed over the weekend to replace Michael Flynn as National Security Adviser "are great," but House Foreign Affairs Committee member Adam Kinzinger said Monday he preferred former U.N. ambassador John Bolton for the slot.
"He is very pragmatic," the Illinois Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. "I've talked about national security issues with him and we've disagreed. He knows what he thinks. I think he would be a great adviser."
Kinzinger, though, said there is no doubt any of the candidates so far are "very good."
Sunday's round of interviews included acting adviser and retired three-star Army Gen. Keith Kellogg, West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen Jr.; Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, an Army strategist; and Bolton. Further interviews were expected Monday, White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, before the Trump chose McMaster on Monday afternoon.
"There is no doubt anybody I've seen out there is very good," said Kinzinger, who thinks Trump's foreign policy strategy is "coming together very well."
"He is strengthening NATO, pushing back against Iran, [and] I think he will put the right person in charge," the lawmaker said.
Meanwhile, he does believe Flynn's conversations with Russia's ambassador were "inappropriate but probably not illegal. We know he covered it up to the vice president, and that's why he lost his job."
Kinzinger said he believes the Senate and House Intelligence committees will do their jobs and examine the Flynn matter, as well as allegations about Trump campaign staffers speaking with Russian contacts.
"We know that some on the left are trying to create this massive 9/11 commission, which will turn this into a big partisan affair based on no solid accusation that the president himself has had any collusion," Kinzinger said.
Trump was elected not because of Russian interference, but because the "vast majority of people in the right states decided we needed a change and something different . . . to basically say he was elected because of the Russians is wrong."
