President Donald Trump might not be able to make a deal with dug-in Democrats, but he has a winning formula for 2020, regardless, against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., according to Newt Gingrich.
"[Schumer] and Pelosi were so bad the other night that the president ought to pay them to go on TV once a week," Gingrich, the former GOP House Speaker, told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y., pointing to the Democratic response to President Trump's Oval Office address on border wall funding. "Because, if that's the future of the Democratic Party, it's going to be a very long election for Democrats in 2020."
Gingrich told host John Catsimatidis, while a compromise is being sought to end the historically long government shutdown, it has long odds as Sen. Schumer just cannot give in against President Trump's demands for border wall funding.
"I think [Schumer] is dealing with the objective reality that his party will not tolerate working with Trump," Gingrich told Catsimatidis. "And so in order to survive, he is taking positions and doing things that you and I would think make no sense at all, and don't fit everything we know about him as a person, but it fits what he thinks he needs to do in order to survive.
"That's a big piece of what's going on."
Gingrich lamented the polarization that far trumps that of when he was House Speaker during former President Bill Clinton's administration.
"These guys have got to be really angry at each other," Gingrich said. "If you think of some of the things they say and do, it's just kind of amazing."
Gingrich said even if pockets of the Democratic party are against open borders, its political goals are not going tobe met unless they take down President Trump and whatever his agenda is.
"There's a real risk for Democrats if they go out and they do something to help President Trump, that their own base is going to go after them," Gingrich concluded. "That's part of what you're watching happen right now."
