House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Republicans should fear losing the House in the midterms, The Hill is reporting.

Her comments came Thursday when asked whether GOP lawmakers should be worried about the House flipping.

"They should be," Pelosi said.

But she appeared to downplay the impact of the coming retirement of House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. She said Democrats are not paying much attention to the workings of the GOP, The Hill noted.

"We're not watching their game, we're watching our game," she said. "It's about the future. It's not about the internal workings of the Republican Caucus."

She maintained low approval ratings of President Donald Trump have left Democrats encouraged.

"When the president is below 50 percent one year before the election, that means he gets the retirements (and) we get the A-Team," Pelosi added. "That this president was, one year before the election, under 40 (percent) really means it's going to be a very good year for us."

Meanwhile, ABC News has reported a senior aide with Pelosi's office said Ryan's departure will have a major impact on the elections.

"This is historic for a speaker to essentially fold in the face of midterm headwinds," the aide said.

And the aide predicted Ryan's decision will be "a morale buster" for Republicans and could lead to even more GOP retirements.
