Republicans — including President Donald Trump's eldest son — pounded Democratic Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Thursday for trashing the $1,000 monthly bonuses many families will receive because the GOP tax cut.

In an outpouring of scorn on Twitter, Republicans lashed out at the pair as out of touch and tone-deaf — with Donald Trump Jr. hitting Florida lawmaker Schultz especially hard for declaring, "I'm not sure that $1,000 goes very far for almost anyone."

He also hammered the Florida lawmaker for an ongoing investigation into her technology staffers; Imran Awan was caught fleeing the country with cash after the FBI opened an investigation into his illicit activities while working for Wasserman Schultz.

California's Pelosi, who earlier in the month referred to the tax break given families compared with the break given corporations were "crumbs," came under fire as well.

What triggered the firestorm was a Town Hall at Florida Atlantic University on Thursday, where both Democrats spoke, and Pelosi compared the boost in salary to a "little piece of cheese" in a mouse trap. The Washington Examiner reported on their comments, citing videos posted by America Rising.

"There's a cartoon that I just love . . . There's a little mouse trap, it's got a little piece of cheese on there and there's a mouse about to take it and that's called the middle class," Pelosi said when asked about the bonuses.

"And around it are fat cats, they look a lot like elephants . . . And that's the thing. Get this little thing and we get this big bonanza. You get the crumb, we get the banquet."

In her remarks, Wasserman Schultz said, "Frankly, if you look at the bonuses, which I haven't heard of a corporate bonus more than $1,000 so far. Which by the way is taxed, so it's not $1,000. And then you spread $1,000 over the course of the year — to think about how much that is — of course they get it all at once. But I'm not sure that $1,000 — which is taxed, taxable — goes very far for almost anyone."

Republicans were incensed.
