It was "appalling" President Donald Trump did not place sanctions on Chinese officials involved with creating detention camps for Muslims, because he did not want to jeopardize a trade deal with Beijing, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Monday, The Hill reported.

Pelosi made the comments in reaction to an interview Trump gave Axios in which, when asked why he had not enacted sanctions earlier this year against China, said "Well, we were in the middle of a trade deal."

"If America does not speak out for human rights in China because of commercial issues, we lose all moral authority to speak out for human rights any place in the world," Pelosi said in a statement. "President Trump's admission that he is looking the other way and enabling one of the worst human rights atrocities of our time in order to ink a trade deal is appalling."

Trump has had the authority under the 2012 Global Magnitsky Act to sanction human rights offenders, according to The Hill.

The president, however, maintained in the Axios interview, he had not been asked to use that law to sanction China over the detention camps, saying "When you say the Magnitsky Act, just so you know, nobody's mentioned it specifically to me with regard to China."

Last week Trump did sign bipartisan legislation that made an additional call for sanctions on Chinese officials connected to the camps.
