If Democrats win back the House in midterm elections, the first bills that would hit the floor would tackle campaign finance reform, moving to lower drug prices, enacting a background-check system for buying gun and legislation that protects Dreamers, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told Politico on Tuesday.
The California Democrat vowed that Democrats would run a tight oversight ship, telling Politico’s Anna Palmer that the “American people deserve the truth and we have to have oversight over the agencies.”
Pelosi also said she expects a surprise this month before the elections. “An intentional surprise which we should expect and you always expect it,” she said. “That’s why you build redundancy in your campaign. … We just have to own the ground and get out the vote and understand that it doesn’t matter what happens, we have to do that.”
The minority leader said that no matter what happens in the midterms, “I don’t see any of us voting for wall funding” when the issue is expected to come up in December.
She agreed that “we have a responsibility to secure our borders” but stressed that “there are ways to do that that are consistent with civilization, humanitarianism and who we are as a nation.”
Pelosi has been busy promoting the Democratic ticket, holding 250 fundraising events in 29 cities, in which she has raised $34.2 million for the party in the third quarter, including $30.5 million directly for the DCCC.
That brings the total she has raised for the party in this year’s cycle to $121.7 million.
