Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, said Monday that Texas needs to, "take the lead" on NAFTA negotiations, The Dallas Morning News reported.
"It's a big issue, and it's a complicated issue, but it starts with us continuing to educate our fellow citizens, and me educating my colleagues," Hurd told a crowd at the George W. Bush Presidential Center during a panel discussion on NAFTA, borders and security.
On the campaign trail, President Donald Trump described NAFTA as a "disaster" for the U.S. and vowed to exit from the deal, but backed off from those threats once in office following pleas from Canada and Mexico.
But Trump said he would renegotiate the deal, which could take until next year according to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
Hurd said strengthening trade relationship with Mexico and Canada was critical for Texas.
"I think my Republican colleagues recognize that in November of 2018, if people feel like they have more money in their pocket and the economy’s doing better, we’re going to be OK," he said. "And one of the ways to ensure that is that we don’t do anything to disrupt, but we strengthen our trade relationships with Mexico and Canada."
