Budget Chief Mulvaney Pins Govt Shutdown Talk on Media, Dems

("Fox News Sunday")

White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney ripped talk of a government shutdown this fall, saying the media narrative fascinates him, despite being reminded President Donald Trump has tweeted using prospects of shutdown as a way to motivate obstructionist Democrats.

"I am always fascinated with the media fascination with the narrative about a shutdown," Mulvaney told "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace, when pressed on President Trump's threat of shutting down government funding.

"We are supposedly going to have a shutdown every six months, according to the media. . . . The only shutdown we've had since I've been in the Trump administration was actually caused by Senate Democrats."

Mulvaney added President Trump believes the government is "spending way too much money."

"We had to give the Democrats a lot of money in order to get the national defense funding that we needed during that omnibus," Mulvaney told Wallace. "But what the president is saying is: '1. No more omnibuses – he's not going to do that anymore; No. 2, I don't think we should spend all of this money, because we don't need to, but if you do, I would like to have my prioritizes funded.'

"That's a reasonable position for the president to take."

Mulvaney concluded with the belief "all signs are good" Congress will get their spending bills passed before the end of the year, adding Congress progress on passing spending bills is ahead of schedule right now.
