Sen. Elizabeth Warren "absolutely" has used her claims of Native American heritage to get ahead with voters and in her career and should be disbarred, Oklahoma Rep. Markwayne Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation, said Friday.
"She is claiming to be of a minority race because of the nonwhite voters," the Republican lawmaker told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "It's very important in a Democrat primary. That's the only reason she is doing it and she got caught in a lie."
Warren, D-Mass., is under fire after it was discovered she listed her race as "American Indian" on a handwritten registration card for the Texas bar in 1986. Last week, she apologized for taking a DNA test to prove her claims of Native American heritage.
Mullin said her DNA results, showing she is .09 percent of Native American heritage, can't back up her claims.
"Even then, DNA testing doesn't show that it's your heritage, your tradition, and enrollment in the tribal membership," said Mullin, whose family has been enrolled in the Cherokee Nation for years.
"What she just needs to do is step back and say, 'look, I'm not qualified to even run for president,'" Mullin said.
He said he does forgive her, but that doesn't make things right.
"She has claimed to be a native American for, I guess, 40 years," said Mullin. "The fact of the matter is she is caught now, and she did apologize but that doesn't mean that she should or can move forward with her political career."
