Republican leaders who say special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe should not have a deadline are showing signs they want him to wrap it up, Politico reported.

While most senior GOP legislators say that Mueller should let facts guide the probe, more of them appear to be calling on Mueller to "wrap it up," the report said.

The message appears to be due to the pull of President Donald Trump and his allies, Mueller opponents who are attempting to close out his funding, and have called on him to end the probe immediately.

Trump's party is searching for a way to talk about the probe without alienating Trump, the report said.

"It's reasonable to expect with the length of time that's passed, they should wrap it up," said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.,  who was an original sponsor of legislation designed to protect Mueller, according to Politico.

Midterm elections are on Republicans' minds, the website noted, and GOP candidates would rather talk about other topics.

"I'm just suggesting that the longer he takes, the more oxygen gets sucked out of the room up here. And the more rumors and innuendo and spin," said Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., Politico reported.

However, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has noted his support for Mueller even after getting a briefing from Trump's campaign about the president unfounded claims of spying in his 2016 campaign, Politico reported.
