The parents of a humanitarian aid worker killed by ISIS in 2015 condemned the Obama administration for her death Thursday and thanked President Donald Trump for ordering the raid that killed the Islamic State’s leader, their voices cracking as they spoke at the Republican National Convention.
Carl and Marsha Mueller detailed the 18-month ordeal of their daughter, Kayla, who was killed in Syria, as well as what they described as arduous contacts with the Obama administration.
“We put all our faith in the government, but the government let us down,” Carl Mueller said. “President (Barack) Obama refused to meet with us until ISIS had already beheaded other Americans. To this day, we’ve never heard from Joe Biden.”
Carl Mueller said the administration showed “more concern for the terrorist in Guantanamo than the American hostages in Syria.”
He described how Pentagon officials had planned a rescue mission, how the Obama administration delayed and then by the time the decision was made to execute, their daughter had been moved to another location.
“What a difference a president makes,” Carl Mueller said. “Under President Trump, U.S. Army special operators conducted a raid on (ISIS leader Abu) al-Baghdadi’s compound. After we learned that al-Baghdadi was killed, we learned something else.
“The operators named themselves Task Force 814, after Aug. 14, Kayla’s birthday. And the mission was named Operation Kayla Mueller. To those soldiers, thank you.”
Carl Mueller said the Trump administration offered empathy they didn’t get from their Obama counterparts.
“Kayla should be here,” Carl Mueller added. “If Donald Trump had been president when Kayla was captured, she would be here today.”
