MSNBC's Chris Matthews to Interview Obama on Tuesday

By    |   Sunday, 19 Apr 2015 05:07 PM

MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews will interview President Barack Obama on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Eastern, Mediaite reports.

The interview will focus on "free trade and news of the day," MSNBC's announcement on Sunday morning said.

Matthews interviewed Obama in 2013 after publicly wondering why the president appeared on other shows, including late-night talk shows, but had not spoken to him.

"I enjoy just duking it out with politicians at a distance," Matthews said then. "I don’t need to beg them to come on my show. But I always thought: I see the president pop up on different kinds of shows, entertainment shows like Letterman and Leno, and I go, 'Why can’t we get him?'"

Fox News Channel's Geraldo Rivera panned the 2013 interview, saying Matthews went easy on Obama because he is a fan.

"He’s a failed Democratic candidate for Congress," Rivera said of Matthews. "He's been a Democrat his whole life. It was more of a fan, you know – not a sycophant – but a fan. An adoring constituent rather than a hard journalistic question."
