Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., said Friday that "Mexico will pay at least part of the tab" for the border wall proposed by President Donald Trump.

On CNN's "New Day" Friday, host Alisyn Camerota quoted Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto telling Trump in a phone call, "Mexico cannot pay for that wall."

"It sounds like he's unequivocal, the Mexican president, that he's not going to pay for it."

Griffith said that Peña Nieto is unequivocal "publicly," although Camerota had quoted him during a private conversation that was later released, that Mexico will "want to continue to have trade with these United States, and to bring their products north. And that's part of the negotiations between nation-states, and we're going to work that out."

He added, "I don't have any question that Mexico will pay at least part of the tab. It has to be a partnership, I have no doubt about that."

Griffith also said, "We promised the American people, not just in the last campaign, we've promised the American people going back to the Reagan administration that we would secure our southern border."

"We haven't done it; it's time for Congress to act," he said, voicing his support for a government shutdown if money for the wall isn't added to the next funding bill.
