Mitt Romney will try to sidestep his feud with President Donald Trump as he runs for the Utah Senate seat being vacated by the retirement of Sen. Orrin Hatch, according to reports.

Politico reports that Romney, who delayed his planned formal announcement because of the deadly Florida school shooting, is likely to frame his campaign as "hyper-local,"  rather than an outspoken Trump critic.

"I think you’ll see him spending his time and building a dialogue with the people of Utah and earning their support," veteran Romney adviser Spencer Zwick told Politico. "It doesn’t mean through a bunch of TV ads. I think people will be surprised, and it will be refreshing how accessible Mitt is to the people of Utah."

Former Romney campaign aides told The Hill Romney will not run a Never Trump-style campaign, though they said he won’t shy away from criticizing the president when they disagree on something.

"He’s not running as a protest candidate against the president. He’s running to get things done," GOP strategist Ryan Williams told The Hill. "(He) understands that the president is the leader of the … Republican Party. "The president shapes the party. When (Romney) was the nominee in 2012, he was the de facto leader of the party, but now President Trump is. But that doesn’t mean that will affect his views."

The Romney-Trump feud dates to the 2016 presidential election, when Romney called Trump a "fraud" who had hijacked the GOP. Romney also has criticized some of Trump’s more extreme statements on immigration and his initial reaction to a white supremacist rally in Virginia.
