Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has lent some credence to President Donald Trump's assertion voter fraud cost him the popular vote – saying election fraud "does occur."

"The notion that election fraud is a fiction is not true," the Kentucky Republican said at a news conference Tuesday, The Hill reported.

"It does occur," he said, adding: "There are always arguments on both sides about how much, how frequent, and all the rest."

Asked about Trump's remarks about fraud robbing him of a popular-vote victory, McConnell said there are "people literally in jail in Kentucky" for voter fraud.

Meanwhile, White House spokesman Sean Spicer insisted Trump had based his remarks on "studies and evidence that people have presented to him." But The Hill reported GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan counters he has seen "no evidence" voter fraud affected the election outcome.
