Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has backed presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's candidacy, but said Tuesday that Trump should release his tax returns as other candidates have long done.

"For the last 30 or 40 years, every candidate for president has released their tax returns, and I think Donald Trump should as well," McConnell said in an interview with Business Insider on Tuesday.

Trump for months has said he will release his tax returns, but has said he won't do so until an IRS audit on them is complete. He has resisted calls to release past returns because he says the various years are interrelated.

McConnell did not go as far as Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, who supports a bill requiring all presidential candidates to release their tax returns, Business Insider noted.

Other Republicans have called on Trump to release his returns, including 2012 nominee Mitt Romney who opposes Trump's nomination. Romney has suggested Trump may be hiding a "bombshell" in the returns.

Politico has reported
Trump might be reluctant to release his returns because they might show his net worth is less than he has publicly claimed.
