Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday said he had "a lot of confidence" in special counsel Robert Mueller, one day after Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy said President Donald Trump was considering firing Mueller.
"I think it was a good choice," McConnell, a Republican, told the Hill of the choice to appoint Mueller to oversee the FBI's growing probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible ties to some of Trump's campaign staff members.
Ruddy said on PBS NewsHour he thought Trump considering terminating the special counsel was, "pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently."
The White House wouldn't deny or confirm the report and said, "only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment."
Mueller has been criticized by some Republicans who suggest he may have a conflict of interest because of his close relationship with former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by Trump in May.
But other GOP members, including Sens. Lindsey Graham and Susan Collins, have backed Mueller and said there's no reason to fire him.
"What's he done to be fired," Graham said Monday.
Added Collins: It would "certainly be an extraordinarily unwise move."
