In a departure with the president, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday said it's clear the U.S. needs more immigration judges to expedite cases at the border, The Hill reports.
"I think we have to follow the law, and I think we clearly do need some more judges," The Hill quoted McConnell.
McConnell's assertion backs up Sen. Ted Cruz who recently called for more judges and is spearheading an effort to double the amount of immigration judges. However, President Donald Trump has repeatedly knocked the notion of adding more judges.
"They want us to choose 5,000 judges. How do you choose 5,000 judges? Can you imagine the corruption, just from a normal standpoint? Just common sense. Can you imagine the corruption?" Trump said Tuesday.
Over the weekend, Trump urged deportations "with no judges or court cases" and then doubled down on that Monday, saying it's the "only real answer" to illegal immigration.
